  43. Installing the new version:
  44. ---------------------------

  46. 1) Replace the ZIPAPER.EXE file for version 1.1 by the new ZIPAPER.EXE.

  48. 2) Rename the file ZIPAPER.DAT that is in the same directory as your wallpaper
  49.    ZIP file, as in this example:
  50.  
  51.       Assume your .ZIP file is called MYPAPER.ZIP
  52.       You would type at the DOS prompt: RENAME ZIPAPER.DAT MYPAPER.ZPA
  53.  
  54. 3) Since the wallpaper file is now extracted into the \WINDOWS directory,
  55.    make sure that ZiPaper is run from that directory.
  56.  
  57. 4) You may need to change the WIN.INI file to look for the file WALPAPER.BMP
  58.    in the Windows directory.  The easiest way to do this is to run the new
  59.    version of ZiPaper, then run Windows.  Click on Control Panel, then Desktop.
  60.    Click on the down-arrow next to the wallpaper file name, and select the file
  61.    WALPAPER.BMP from the list.  Click on OK and you're done!

  96. ZiPaper (that's "Zip Paper") is a program that chooses one of your .BMP files
  97. for use as Windows Wallpaper.  There are several programs out that do that,
  98. though.  ZiPaper is different - it lets you place all your .BMP Wallpaper
  99. files in a .ZIP file, reducing disk space dramatically.
  100.  
  101. Features (arranged by version number):

  106. Using PKZIP, you place your Windows .BMP wallpaper files into a ZIP file.
  107. ZiPaper reads the ZIP file, and extracts one at random.
  108.  
  109. Because ZiPaper keeps track of each file it has extracted, you are guaranteed to
  110. get an even selection of files (some wallpaper selection programs have a nasty
  111. habit of selecting the same files over and over again).
  112.

  115. You may specify "Tiled" or "Centered" for each wallpaper file in the ZIP file.
  116.  
  117. You can temporarily "disable" individual wallpaper files, so that ZiPaper won't
  118. extract them.  You can still keep them in the ZIP file, though.

  120. You can group your files into any of 4 groups, with Tile/Center and Enable/
  121. Disable specified differently in each group.  This allows you to group "after
  122. hours" wallpaper files separately from other files, group 16 color and 256 color
  123. files separately, etc.

  127. You may specify a startup option, /F, that allows you to manually select which
  128. wallpaper file you want extracted (you select from a list).  Have you ever
  129. wanted to show someone your Windows setup, and wanted a specific wallpaper?
  130. Now you can.
  131.  
  132. A similar option, /F?, asks you if you want to manually select a wallpaper file
  133. or not.  It waits for an answer for 3 seconds - if you don't answer Y then it
  134. randomly selects a wallpaper file for you.
  135.  
  136. You can force ZiPaper to extract a specific wallpaper file by using the
  137. /F=filename.bmp option.
  138.  
  139. You may now use multiple ZIP files, and keep them in the same directory (if you
  140. wish).  The .DAT file that is created is now named similar to the ZIP file name.
  141.  
  142. The Wallpaper file is now extracted into the Windows directory, to simplify the
  143. task of using multiple ZIP files on different drives or directories.

  152. Requirements for running ZiPaper
  153. --------------------------------

  155. ZiPaper is a DOS program, and therefore does not require Windows.  However,
  156. it is designed to select Windows .BMP files for use as Wallpaper, so if you
  157. don't have Windows, you don't need this program!
  158.  
  159. You need PKUNZIP.EXE from  PKWARE, Inc.

  164. It is available on many BBSes as Shareware.  You'll also need PKZIP.EXE to
  165. create the ZIP file.

  167. Quick Tour:
  168. -----------
  169.  
  170. You run ZiPaper each time BEFORE you start Windows.
  171.  
  172. You tell ZiPaper the name of your ZIP file that contains .BMP files for use
  173. as wallpaper.  It will extract a .BMP file randomly into the Windows directory,
  174. and change its name to WALPAPER.BMP.
  175.  
  176. You make a one-time change to Windows, telling it to use the file
  177. WALPAPER.BMP as wallpaper.
  178.  
  179. That's it!  (Aside from the advanced options, which will be discussed later.)
  180.  
  181. Installation/Running
  182. --------------------
  183.  
  184. Move all the .BMP files you want to use as wallpaper into a ZIP file.  See
  185. PKZIP's instructions for this.  Place the ZIP file in the Windows directory,
  186. or anywhere else you wish.
  187.  
  188. Place the file ZIPAPER.EXE in any directory on your path (actually, if you
  189. specify the path when you run the program, you can place ZiPaper anywhere on
  190. your hard disk).
  191.  
  192. Since ZiPaper should be run each time BEFORE you run Windows, I suggest you
  193. place the line that runs ZiPaper into your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, or a batch file
  194. that you use to run Windows.  DO NOT run ZiPaper from the Load= or Run= line
  195. of your WIN.INI file.  Doing so will produce unpredictable results.

  200. Here's the syntax for running ZiPaper (anything enclosed in brackets [] is
  201. optional):

  203.    ZiPaper [d:\path\]walpaper.zip [[d:\path\]pkunzip.exe] [advanced options]
  204.  
  205.    "d:\path\walpaper.zip" is the drive, path, and file name of the ZIP file
  206.     that contains your .BMP files.
  207.  
  208.    "d:\path\pkunzip.exe" (optional) is the drive, path, and file name of
  209.     PKUNZIP.EXE.  You don't need to specify this if PKUNZIP.EXE is located
  210.     along your current path.
  211.  
  212.    "advanced options" will be explained later.
  213.  
  214. Run Windows, click on Control Panel, Desktop.  In the box titled "Wallpaper",
  215. click in the box that is labeled "File".  Delete what is in there (if
  216. anything) and type in the name "WALPAPER.BMP".  If you have *any* Wallpaper
  217. that you would like Centered, please read the section on Tiled/Centered
  218. Wallpaper, below.  For now, click on "Tile".
  219.  
  220. Click on OK and you're done.

  222. Tiled/Centered Wallpaper:
  223. -------------------------
  224.  
  225. If you have wallpaper files that don't fill the screen, you have 2 options.
  226. The first is to "tile" it.  This causes Windows to duplicate the wallpaper
  227. file across your screen until the screen is full.  The second option is to
  228. "center" it, which causes Windows to center the wallpaper on your screen.
  229. Neither of these options has any affect on wallpaper that fills the entire
  230. screen.
  231.  
  232. If all your small wallpaper files are either "tiled" or "centered", then set
  233. the option in the Desktop section of Control Panel accordingly.  If not, see
  234. the section on Advanced Options, which will explain how to select "tile" or
  235. "center" for each file.

  242.                            Advanced Options:

  245. NOTE: ZiPaper can function just fine without using these advanced options.
  246.       They are available to enhance ZiPaper's operation, but you certainly
  247.       don't have to use them.
  248.  
  249. ZiPaper creates a data file for each ZIP file you use.  The file is named the
  250. same as the ZIP file, except it has the extension ZPA.  This file stores
  251. information about each wallpaper that is in the ZIP file.  (Don't worry if you
  252. add or remove wallpaper files from the ZIP file - ZiPaper will adjust its file
  253. accordingly.)

  255. Setup Screen:
  256. -------------
  257.  
  258. If you wish, you may run ZiPaper with the /S option, and ZiPaper will bring
  259. up a setup screen that allows you to tell ZiPaper a few things about each
  260. wallpaper file.
  261.  
  262.    ZiPaper [d:\path\]walpaper.zip [[d:\path\]pkunzip.exe] /S
  263.  
  264. Here are the things you can tell ZiPaper about each wallpaper:
  265.  
  266.    1) Whether to Tile or Center it.  You may also set it to "Default" (which
  267.       is what they are all initialized to at the start).  "Default" means
  268.       that they will be Tiled or Centered, depending on what you specify the
  269.       default as (at run time - explained below).
  270.  
  271.    2) Whether to temporarily ignore (disable) it.
  272.  
  273. Four Option Groups:
  274. -------------------
  275.  
  276. Here's where it gets a little tricky.  You can specify the above options UP
  277. TO 4 TIMES for each wallpaper.  Why would you want to do that?  Here's a
  278. couple of scenarios (they're simple; you can devise more complex ones):
  279.  
  280.    1) You run Windows in 640x480 mode and 800x600 mode.  You have some
  281.       wallpaper files that you want centered in 640x480, and tiled in
  282.       800x600.  You set one set of options to specify "Centered", and another
  283.       "Tiled".
  284.  
  285.    2) You have some wallpaper files that are not appropriate during working
  286.       hours, but you want to use them after-hours.  You set one set of
  287.       options to "Disable" certain wallpaper files, and you use this option
  288.       during working hours.  You set another other to "Enabled", and you use
  289.       it after hours.
  290.  
  291. Run ZiPaper with the /S option, and look at the screen.  It is pretty self-
  292. explanatory, once you understand the "4 option groups".

  298. Using the screen:

  301. Use the Tab key and the arrow keys to move around the screen.  Page Up and
  302. Page Down allow you to scroll through all your files (if you have more than
  303. will fit on one screen).
  304.  
  305. Change an option by typing the first letter.
  306.  
  307. Press Escape when done.  ZiPaper will ask you if you want to save the options
  308. you just changed.

  311.                  Running with the Advanced Options:

  314. ZiPaper [d:\path\]walpaper.zip [d:\path\pkunzip.exe] [/W [/T|/C]] [/1../4]
  315.  
  316. /W  This option means "Update the WIN.INI file", and is used when you want
  317.     ZiPaper to look at the Tile/Center options you specified on the Setup
  318.     Screen (see above).  ZiPaper will change the Tile/Center option
  319.     accordingly.  ZiPaper saves the old version of WIN.INI as WININI.BAK.
  320.     NOTE: the Windows directory must be the current directory in order for
  321.     ZiPaper to find the WIN.INI file.
  322.  
  323. /T or /C  If you set up the Tile/Center option for a file to be "Default",
  324.     this option tells ZiPaper what the "default" is (/T for Tiled, /C for
  325.     Centered).  If you don't specify either, ZiPaper will assume Tiled.
  326.  
  327. /1../4  Specifying /1, /2, /3, or /4 tells ZiPaper which set of options to
  328.     use (see Setup Screen, above).  If you don't specify one of these, then
  329.     /1 is assumed.
  330.  
  331. Examples:
  332. ---------

  334. ZIPAPER D:\GRAPHICS\WALPAPER.ZIP /W
  335.  
  336.   This runs ZiPaper, extracts a wallpaper (based on the first set of
  337.   options), and updates the WIN.INI file for Tile/Center.
  338.  
  339. ZIPAPER D:\GRAPHICS\WALPAPER.ZIP /W /C /2
  340.  
  341.   This runs ZiPaper, extracts a wallpaper (based on the second set of
  342.   options).  If the file's Tile/Center option is "Default", it will be
  343.   centered.  ZiPaper updates the WIN.INI file for Tile/Center.

  350.                           Other Options

  353. Sometimes, you want a particular wallpaper file.  Perhaps you are going to show
  354. off your Windows setup, and you have a really eye-catching wallpaper.  A new
  355. option (with 3 variations) has been added to facilitate this:
  356.  
  357.    ZiPaper [d:\path\]walpaper.zip [[d:\path\]pkunzip.exe] /F
  358.                                                           /F?
  359.                                                           /F=filename.bmp
  360.  
  361. /F  This option will run ZiPaper just like the /S option does (see above).  It
  362.     brings up the setup screen, and lets you chose which wallpaper file you
  363.     want ZiPaper to extract.  Just hilight the file you want, and press F10.
  364.  
  365. /F? This option is just like the above /F option, except that it asks you if
  366.     you want to select a file manually.  You have 3 seconds in which to respond
  367.     Y.  If you type a Y, then the setup screen is brought up, and you can
  368.     select a file.  If you answer N, or the 3 seconds passes by, ZiPaper acts
  369.     as though the /F option had never been specified: it extracts a wallpaper
  370.     file randomly.
  371.  
  372.     If you find yourself using the /F option frequently, run ZiPaper with the
  373.     /F? option ALL THE TIME.
  374.  
  375. /F=filename.bmp
  376.     This option allows you to force ZiPaper to extract the specified wallpaper
  377.     file.  You might use this option with a special batch file for those times
  378.     that you know you will want this wallpaper file.

  384.                           Life with ZiPaper:

  387. Once you've done the installation steps, you need never bother with ZiPaper
  388. again (except to use the Advanced Options, or maybe to send in a shareware
  389. fee <grin>).  You may add and remove .BMP files from your ZIP file with no
  390. fear of upsetting ZiPaper.
  391.  
  392. ZiPaper creates a file with the same name as your ZIP file, but with the
  393. extension .ZPA (in the directory that contains your ZIP file).  This file keeps
  394. track of what .BMP files it has chosen, so that you get a more even
  395. distribution of Wallpaper choices.  It also holds your advanced options setup.
  396. If you have any problems, you may delete this file. It will be re-created the
  397. next time ZiPaper is run.  (Remember, though, that if you delete it, you will
  398. have to set up your Advanced Options again, if you use them.)
